HKUST Startup

Actively engaging in stimulating and assisting a campus-wide culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, HKUST is becoming one of the key actors in the local innovation eco-systems. Varieties of entrepreneurship activities are organized all year round, ranging from courses, projects, seminars, workshops, competitions, networking events, acceleration programs to mentorship programs.

In particular, the Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (TSSSU) provided by the Innovation and Technology Commission has stimulated great interests and potential among HKUST faculty members, students and alumni in technology entrepreneurship using technologies or intellectual properties developed at HKUST. In the past three years, there have been in total 120 applications for the TSSSU funding at HKUST. 40 new technology start-ups have received the funding support, of which over 70% have built their businesses upon HKUST technologies or intellectual properties.

The video on how TSSSU help universities start technology businesses and facilitate the realisation of R&D results can be viewed here. More information for each TSSSU company can be obtained by accessing the links below. Looking forward, we foresee more innovative startups will sprout up in this fertile soil of innovation and entrepreneurship and grow across Hong Kong and beyond Hong Kong.

Topics to be covered in this presentation include:
• Choosing a research topic that can get patent funding
• Available patent tools for HKUST researchers: Patsnap; Google Patent; USPTO; European Patent Search; CNIPA
• What is patentable – about novelty and inventive steps
• Writing the patent – interfacing with the patent attorney

How to Make a Better Invention Disclosure

18 March 2021 (Thur), 10:30 am - 11:15 am
Venue: Online via Zoom (Link will be sent to successful registrants)
Organized By: Technology Transfer Center & Entrepreneurship Center
An invention disclosure is a crucial process to commercialize your technology and research!
It may be the finishing touch of an R&D project, but it is also a starting point of the patenting process.

A good invention disclosure will help the patent drafting in terms of speed and quality, it will help setting the appropriate protection scope, and ultimately raise the chance of patent grant and the value of the IP.

A good invention disclosure should include at least a statement of the problem that the invention is trying to solve, the highlight of main inventive/unique features, and enough technical details to allow someone to re-create your invention. A prior art search result will also be very helpful.

In this seminar, we will discuss a systematic way of making great invention disclosures, and show how to conduct an effective prior art search.

2019 Symposium on Third Generation Semiconductor

26 September 2019 (Thursday) 9:00am-5:30pm
Venue: Grand Hall A, Phase 3, Hong Kong Science Park, Shatin N.T
Organized By: Hong Kong Science and Technology Park; Chinese University of Hong Kong; City University of Hong Kong; Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; IEEE Hong Kong Section; IEEE AP/MTT Hong Kong Chapter
Third-generation semiconductor materials generally refer to Gallium Nitride, Silicon Carbide, or other semiconductors that have a relatively wide bandgap (2 to 4 eV), compared to conventional semiconductor materials like silicon (1 to 1.5 eV). Devices made by wide bandgap semiconductors can operate at much higher voltages, frequencies and temperatures than those made by conventional semiconductors. These properties enable their widespread applications in consumer and industrial electronics, clean transportation, smart grid and alternative energy applications. Their inherent advantages in many applications, combined with the unique properties not found in conventional semiconductors, have attracted considerable attention from governments, industries, and research communities worldwide.

It is thus timely for semiconductor researchers and industry practitioners to organize a symposium to examine the current status of the field and project its future developments in advanced information and energy saving applications.

The one-day Symposium on Third Generation Semiconductor is organized in Grand Hall A of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park on Thursday, 26 September 2019. Renowned technology leaders and industrialists from China, United States, Europe, and Japan are invited to come to Hong Kong to present their view on the technology and forecast their future development.

Intellectual property takes many forms: from patents and trademarks to copyrights and trade secrets. Being aware of the different types of intellectual property and how to protect them is an important aspect of your research at the university. When you develop intellectual property, including discovering something new or an improvement of an existing product or process, what do you do? How do you go about protecting your intellectual property, especially your new inventions? This seminar will provide guidance in answering these questions, among others, by addressing, for example, the following items:

• Brief introduction of various types of IPs: patent, trademark, copyright (including software & database), trade secret or know-how, design
• IP protection strategy with respect to different nature of inventions
• Introduction to patents
• Patent filing and prosecution strategies: an international perspective (Provisional filing, PCT filing, EU filing)
• Best time to file a patent application (including impact of public disclosure on patent filing)
• How does patent associate with other types of IPs: trademark, copyright and trade secret?
• How to increase the value of an invention?

How the Patent System Works

20 November 2017 (Monday 16:00 - 17:30)
Venue: HKUST Business School Central, Rm 1501- 02, 15/F Hong Kong Club Building, 3A Chater Road, Central (Round trip coach will be arranged)
Organized By: Office of Knowledge Transfer & Technology Transfer Center
To many (maybe most) scientists and engineers the patent system can be a daunting thing. Unlike the laws of nature it is a man-made, man-operated thing. It is complex both substantively and procedurally. And if non-lawyer scientists and engineers do not know the basics of the system they are likely to miss out on its potential or fall victims to others who do.
In this lecture Sir Robin will aim to give the audience a basic understanding of how it all works without descending into complex legal detail. The intention is help members of the audience know when to ask a patent expert and how to relate to them.
The seminar would be hosted by the Honourable Andrew Liao Cheung-sing, GBS, SC, JP, Council Chairman. Professor Tony F Chan, the President will also join the discussion session.
Due to the change of time and venue, please re-register if you have registered the seminar before to facilitate transport arrangement.

Seminar: Protecting and Monetizing Software Using Intellectual Property

7 October 2016 (Friday 11:00 am to 12:30 pm)
Venue: Room 7336 (7/F, Lifts 13-15)
Organized By: Technology Transfer Center
Intellectual property rights include patents, industrial designs, trademark, trade secret, and copyright protection. While patent protection may be appropriate for some software products, other rights may also form a “fence” to prevent competitors from copying an invention. Successful companies trying to mitigate the risk of their consumer-critical features and products being copied by their competitors may need to take into account different balancing factors such as the selected IP assets, the countries where those assets are sought, and other factors such as costs for obtaining the IP. A case study focused on software products will be used to illustrate how to address strategic IP protection concerns.

This seminar hosted by the Technology Transfer Center (TTC) will focus on practical approaches to balance the above factors and to obtain international IP that provides you and your company with a valuable commercial resource in the form of IP assets. An overview of the paths to monetization and how IP assets support those paths will also be discussed.

Venue: Room 1403, SCI/HOME (Lifts 25-26)

Value drivers for medical innovations include such things as validating clinical data, regulatory approval, and, of course, patent exclusivity in addition to improved patient outcomes and cost savings. In recent years, U.S. Supreme Court decisions have upset fundamental assumptions about the types of life science innovations that are eligible for patent protection. These decisions have changed the landscape for patent-eligibility as it relates to natural products, personalized medicine, and other innovations in the life sciences. Patent claims that were thought to pass muster are now being labeled “laws of nature, natural phenomena, and abstract ideas” and, thus, patent-ineligible.

Venue: Room 5619 (5/F, Lifts 31-32)
Organized By: Technology Transfer Center (TTC)
Many ground-breaking technologies influencing each and every one of us begin in a research and development laboratory. But scientists don’t just invent or create the intellectual property (IP), they play a critical role in its commercialisation, including making the difference between commercialisation occurring, or not occurring. Their parts go beyond just about financial return, they also help increase the chance of successful commercialisation.

In this seminar, Prof. Philip Mendes will share some of his experiences about scientists contributing to commercialisation, and how they do so without sacrificing other things that are important to them, such as publications.

Best Timing for IP Protection – Publication VS Patent Application

23 April 2015 (Thursday)
Venue: Cheung On Tak Lecture Theatre (LT-E)

This seminar, hosted by the Technology Transfer Center (TTC) in partnership with Nath, Goldberg & Meyer, will provide you with a practical guide to better extract values from your inventions by answering the following questions:
- What is considered a publication under the patent laws?
- How are publications and patent applications similar? How are they different?
- How much information can be published without fear of losing future patent protection? When can this information optionally be published?
- Is the research ready for patent protection (timing)?
- How to deal with unexpected publications?
- What are some important aspects of a good patent application?
- How do these answers affect the (careful) drafting of a useful patent application?

Organized By: Technology Transfer Center (TTC)
As a faculty member or student of a research university, there are inherent pressures to publish research work, whether through graduate thesis, trade publications, or presenting a speech at a technical conference. Working within the tension of needing to publish your work yet protecting it through the patent process becomes a valuable skill. This seminar, hosted by the Technology Transfer Center (TTC) in partnership with Nath, Goldberg & Meyer, will provide you with a practical guide to better extract values from your inventions by answering the following questions: - What is considered a publication under the patent laws? - How are publications and patent applications similar? How are they different? - How much information can be published without fear of losing future patent protection? When can this information optionally be published? - Is the research ready for patent protection (timing)? - How to deal with unexpected publications? - What are some important aspects of a good patent application? - How do these answers affect the (careful) drafting of a useful patent application?
