Patents are obtained by researchers for the purpose of monetizing an invention. Therefore, researchers need to consider the marketability of a patent obtained from their research early in their research process. This presentation will review the entire progression, from initial concept to marketable product, as part of the patent process.
Topics to be covered in this presentation include:
• Choosing a research topic that can get patent funding
• Available patent tools for HKUST researchers: Patsnap; Google Patent; USPTO; European Patent Search; CNIPA
• What is patentable – about novelty and inventive steps
• Writing the patent – interfacing with the patent attorney

An invention disclosure is a crucial process to commercialize your technology and research!
It may be the finishing touch of an R&D project, but it is also a starting point of the patenting process.
A good invention disclosure will help the patent drafting in terms of speed and quality, it will help setting the appropriate protection scope, and ultimately raise the chance of patent grant and the value of the IP.
A good invention disclosure should include at least a statement of the problem that the invention is trying to solve, the highlight of main inventive/unique features, and enough technical details to allow someone to re-create your invention. A prior art search result will also be very helpful.
In this seminar, we will discuss a systematic way of making great invention disclosures, and show how to conduct an effective prior art search.
